I was talking with a realtor friend of mine recently and naturally, the topic of how business was going came up. He mentioned that his business was actually doing pretty well in this market. So, obviously interested, we talked for awhile about the things he was doing…what was working, what wasn’t. It got me to thinking… He has adapted very well for the environment we’re in.
Do YOU know what happened to more than 50% of the real estate agents and mortgage brokers in our market in the last few years? That’s right! They weren’t able to adapt!
So, in thinking about that, I went out in search of a few ideas on how to adapt. Here are a few that may help you in your business!
1. Think long-term. Ask yourself "What if?" questions. Think about the consequences of dealing with a situation in various ways. Ask, "What will I lose?" and "What will I gain?"
2. Prepare for change with continuous learning. Change is a constant in everyone's life. The skills required to meet various needs will change throughout all stages of life. It makes sense that we need to keep our knowledge base up to date.
3. Look beneath the surface. Welcome challenges. Every challenging situation brings the chance to grow wiser and more skillful. Somewhere, someone has successfully dealt with the same situation. Seek out answers.
4. Become clear on your values: the principles that guide your actions. Then look at your needs: those things that must be met in ways that remain true to your values. Ask yourself this question: "Is my reaction an attempt to meet a personal need in a healthy manner, or is it a creative solution to some other problem?" Then ask, "Is my choice of action in keeping with my core values?"
5. Remember the good and forget the bad. Learn from what did not work well and move forward. Dwelling on the negative is obviously counterproductive.
6. Be true to your vision. Know where you are and where you want to go. Know it for all of your actions. Keeping your goal in mind and your path clear is the best way to keep your mind, and business, moving forward.
